accused of stealing from fare card machines are set to plead guilty in court today. horace mcdade and john hale were arrested in january. prosecutors say the pair would drop off bags of money on the way to the revenue facility and pick them up after their shifts. they say the two spent most of the money on lottery tickets. police were tipped off after one of the employees was buying tickets with bags full of coins. another late springlike temperature this morning. we're not even into astronomical spring yet. >> that's right. yesterday may have let people down. we only got to the upper 60s yesterday. today, back to the 70s. guess what -- all week long we'll be in the 70s. >> nice. >> the main thing we have to talk about is when we'll see rain around the area. here's a look at the highs. 75 right in d.c. 76 in fredericksburg. 68, though, down in pax river. a little cooler there. and temperatures in the southwest pocket of virginia could get up to around 80 around

demonstrators who returned to the park saturday to mark the anniversary. police detained at least 70 people during the protest. tonight culpeper county residents will discuss a possible foigz remove the county sheriff. in 60s, sheriff michael jenkins helped put michael hash behind bars for murder. hash was reliefd from jail last week after a federal judge accused police and prosecutors of what he called outrageous misconduct. the police and prosecutors in the case are accused of concealing a plea deal with another man accused in the murder. they were also accused of not revealing failed polygraph tests and lying about an informant's role. yesterday sheriff jenkins denied all wrongdoing. >> as soon as it is allowed, i will answer your questions, i'll give details. if possible, i'll even show the recorded video interrogations from the investigation and make those public to you in a town hall meeting. you can see what i did for yourself. >> the county prosecutor in the case has resigned but denied any

wrongdoing, as well. a special prosecutor is currently deciding whether to retry michael hash. all right. look at this mess. a driver crashed into a building in the brookland neighborhood in the district. this happened yesterday morning in the 3500 block of 12th street northeast. witnesses tell news4 that the driver backed into the building while trying to parallel park. a father who was in the path of the van so what was happening and pushed his daughter's stroller outside of the -- out of harm's way. no one was injured. no word on whether the driver will face any charges. deaf reach, inc., has its headquarters inside the building. and engineer are right now surveying the damage to determine what repairs might be needed. and lawyers for the former university of virginia lacrosse player convicted in the beating death of his former girlfriend are asking for a retrial. a motion was filed on behalf of george huguely in charlottesville circuit court on friday. in february huguely was found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of yeardley love.

a jury recommended he serve 26 years in prison. no sentencing date has yet been set. mitt romney is holding on to his front-runner status in decision 2012. the republican presidential candidate picked up all 20 delegates in sunday's primary in puerto rico. romney is now looking ahead to the next contest in illinois. he focused on the economy when he spoke to a crowd in the northern part of that state. romney told the crowd he is the only candidate with the experience to beat president obama in november's general election. >> i don't think we're going to replace an economic lightweight with another economic lightwa ds lightweight. i'm not a lightweight when it comes to the economy. i understand how the economy works. >> both have said they will stay in the race. according to "the new york times," storm's advisoriers are trying to persuade him to switch delegates. tomorrow much more is at

stake. 54 delegates up for grabs. polls have shown republican voters favor mitt romney in the moderate midwestern state. rick santorum will only be eligible for 44 delegates because he's not on the ballot in all of the illinois districts. and puerto rico's victory gave mitt romney a commanding lead in the delegate count. he has 521 delegates going into the race. rick santorum has 253. and newt gingrich is trailing with 136 delegates. ron paul has 50. the candidate needs 1,144 delegates to become the republican presidential nominee. president obama and most of the first family spent sunday at an historic d.c. church. the president, first lady, and daughter sasha attended service at st. john's epaul kiska pal church across lafayette square from the white house. the church is used to having presidents in the pews. when asked what he and the president talked about after the service, the reverend simply said, basketball brackets.

we could feel the pain at the pump ease up but not in the immediate future. according to aaa, the average in is $3.83 a gallon. the highest point for the year, for this time of year, that is. analysts expect gasoline prices to peak in late april or early may depending on what develops in the crude oil market. then prices could retreat for the second half of the year, aaa says. according to aaa, drivers are paying about $4.07 for a gallon of regular. in maryland, $3.86. virginia, $3.75. in west virginia, $3.88 for a gallon of regular gasoline. 4:37 now. 58 degrees. ahead on "news4 today," was the shooting death of a teen really in self-defense? what the 911 tapes are revealing about the incident as outrage over the death continues to grow. more wild weather. the latest state to be hit by a pair of tornadoes last night. and it's setting up to be another nice week around here.

riots broke out at the olympic stadium in athens, greece. fans threw flares and molotov cocktails at police and set fire to the stands. the officials were forced to end the game early and pull players

from the field. the violence started when teens and young adults tried to enter the stadium without tickets and got worse from there. at least 20 officers were hurt. 50 people were arrested. a teenager's death in central florida has a community debating whether it was self-defense or racial profiling. three weeks after the shooting, police have released the 911 recordings now. >> so you think he's yelling help? >> yes. >> all right, what is your -- >> there's gunshots. >> 17-year-old trey von martin was walking to a friend's home when a neighborhood watch volunteer shot and killed him. the shooter, a man named george zimmerman, told police the teen looked suspicious. 911 dispatchers told zimmerman not to pursue martin, but the two got into an altercation before the shooting. later police found martin carrying candy, money, and an iced tea. police say they found no evidence to arrest zimmerman so far. meanwhile, martin's family says it wants justice.

brigade accused the two of having classified documents and pictures from the late leader muammar ka daddy. the two were working for the english language press tv when the group kidnapped them. to a news4 exclusive. a man shot insides a d.c. ihop restaurant because he was gay says his attacker will seek justice. the shooting happened last weekend at the restaurant in the -- in the ihop in columbia heights. police call the case a hate crime. the victim got out of the hospital on thursday and did not want to be identified. he says it's unfortunate he was targeted because of his sexuality. >> that's the biggest thing that really concerns me is that it's so easy for people in our society to -- to take the life or even attempt to take a life. >> anti-hate crime advocates organized a rally in response to the shooting along with two beatings involving a gay man and

transjenner woman. that rally will be held tomorrow at 7:00 at columbia heights irk hop on 14th and irving streets. money raised will help pay for hospital bills for the victims. police have not made an arrest in any of the cases. a big day for apple. the technology giant is expected to announce what it plans to do with nearly $100 billion in stockpiled cash. chief executive tim cook told shareholders they have more money than needed to run the company. there are hopes the company will issue a dividend, payout from corporate profits, to shareholders. apple is expected to see a bit of a drop in profits because of higher production costs on the new ipad. a research firm took apart the newest version of the ipad and estimated that it cost about $364 to make each one of those ipad. 9% more than it took to build the ipad 2. despite the increase in prices, the new ipad sells for the same price as the old one. general motors is suspending

production of the chevy volt, leaving 1,300 worker without a job for five weeks. the automaker wants to lower inventory because fewer people are buying the electric car. g.m. sold just over 1,600 volts this year. less than what is needed to meet the goal of selling 60,000 volts for the year. this morning, police in nebraska are waking up to assess the damage from two tornadoes. it hit in north platte last night. this photograph shows one of the tornadoes. it was taken by a railroad worker. he says the tornado traveled on the ground for at least ten minutes. we're told that several homes and buildings have been destroyed. so far, no deaths have been reported, but two people were injured. they're both expected to be okay. and people in fairfax county will be preparing for the worst today during a tornado drill. the three-day emergency exercise is called operation enduring collaboration. the scenario will be as if a major tornado hit. the last tornado in the county

welcome back. tomorrow is the beginning of the annual cherry blossom festival in washington. the unseasonably warm weather forced the national parks service to revise its peak bloom estimates. the blossoms are now expected to

reach peak bloom tomorrow on the first day of the festival. if you're heading out, a shuttle service is running between hanes point and the thomas jefferson memorial. the cherry blossom festival will run to april 27. wonder how many blossoms will be left by then. >> right. starting today shz those 75 and older -- those 75 and older will have an easier time getting through airport security. they will not have to take off shoes or light jackets. in most cases, they will skip pat-downs and just walk through metal detectors or imaging machines. the transportation security administration is testing the program at four airports including chicago o'hare, denver, orlando, and portland. if everything works well, there the tsa will expand the program. a former mr. universe is 100 years old. manahar ike turned a century on saturday. he lives in cull cut aindia. he says -- culcuta, india.
